Sony Xperia X review: Rated X

There's a shift of command in the house of Xperia. The Sony Xperia X and its two siblings are taking over from the Xperia Z. A dynasty has come to an end. We hear the C and M families are being put out to pasture as well, soon it will be all X top to bottom.

So, what's the new face of Sony like? The Xperia X, which will likely form the backbone of the new lineup, persists with the angular aesthetics that debuted with the original Xperia Z back in 2013. It has a metal frame, but no more waterproofing (that's exclusive to the Xperia X Performance). Sony's trademark sonic experience however lives on with the on-board stereo speakers and High-Res audio. Another Sony staple, the camera, is more than robust but has an uncomfortable question to answer.

 Xperia Z Features

5" 1,080 x 1,920px LCD display with 441ppi, X-Reality for Mobile, Triluminos technology and Dynamic Contrast Enhancer; scratch-resistant glass, oleophobic coating
Android OS v6.0 Marshmallow with Xperia launcher
Hexa-core Qualcomm Snapdragon 650, a dual-core 1.8 GHz Cortex-A72 and quad-core 1.4 GHz Cortex-A53; Adreno 510 GPU; 3GB RAM
23 MP camera with 1080p@60fps video recording and tracking autofocus; 13 MP front-facing camera with 1080p@30fps video
32GB of built-in storage and a microSD card slot
Single and dual-SIM variants
LTE Cat.6 (300Mbps); Dual-band Wi-Fi a/b/g/n/ac; A-GPS/GLONASS receiver, Bluetooth v4.1, FM radio with RDS
Active noise cancellation with a dedicated mic; 24-bit/192kHz Hi-Res audio
2,620mAh non-removable battery
We need to re-draw the Xperia family tree. If we agree that the Xperia X Performance replaces the Z5, then which one is X's predecessor? We think it's the Xperia M5.

Here's the deal: 5" 1080p screen, 13MP selfie camera, 21.2MP main camera with 4K video, IP68 rating. That's the Xperia M5. The Xperia X throws in a metal frame and stereo speakers, but it loses 4K and IP68. It's an awkward trade-off to make against last year's midranger.

Sony says that its secret sauce makes the Xperia X more than just a midrange handset and we're sure Sony fans would agree. So, if you want to experience this phone with your heart first - feel free. Starting on the next page, the hard facts and reason are back in the conversation.

It looks like Sony will follow Nintendo’s cue and focus on mobile gaming. The company announced today that it will form a new business unit that is tasked with bringing PlayStation titles and IP to iOS and Android devices. That sounds like great news for gamers, but there’s a caveat here, it seems.
Forward Works, Sony’s mobile gaming arm, is going to focus on users based in Japan and Asia, according to today’s announcement.
The division will be formally created on April 1 — not a hoax (we hope) and the same date that Sony Computer Entertainment becomes Sony Interactive Entertainment — so we’re likely to learn more after then.
Atsushi Morita, SCE’s head in Japan
Nintendo released its first mobile game this month, Miitomo. The long-awaited title isn’t really a mainstream release, though. Rather, it is a social app that lets users create cartoon-like avatars — very much like the ‘Miis’ you can create with the Nintendo Wii. That’s likely to leave it appealing to hardcore Nintendo fans. Sony, however, has hinted that its mobile titles will be “full-fledged,” which makes us optimistic that they will be more universally appealing. Sony’s previous effort at tapping smartphones — PlayStation Mobile — was tied to its Vita handheld device. It closed down last year.

Sony Xperia X hands-on: A closer look

Introduction
Sony Smartphones invited us over to Tokyo to give us a glimpse of the upcoming Android Latest Xperia X - the pioneer in the company's new lineup that puts an end to 6 generations of Xperia Z flagships.

The Xperia X is not a direct successor to the Z5, mind you, this is a burden the Xperia X Performance will have to deal with. Instead, it ushers in Sony's new design language, which let's face it, does build upon the fundamentals of the old one.

The Xperia X also introduces us to most of the flagship's hardware, while still letting it keep exclusivity on some features - IP68 certification and top-class chipset in particular.

Sony Xperia X at a glance:

  • Form factor: metal body, 2.5D glass rounded bevel screen
  • Screen: 5" Triluminos display, 1080p resolution (441ppi)
  • Camera: 23MP/1080p with 1/2.3" sensor, f/2.0, Predictive Hybrid AF; 13MP selfie camera
  • Chipset: Snapdragon 650 (2x A72 + 4x A53 cores); 3GB of RAM
  • Storage: 32GB, expandable with microSD cards
  • OS: Android 6.0 Marshmallow
  • Audio: stereo speakers, Hi-Res audio, DSEE HX, LDAC
  • Battery: 2,620mAh

The Xperia X does get the top-spec camera of its bigger brother (or should we say wiser, as they're both 5-inchers) - that means 23MP maximum resolution, phase detection autofocus, and a f/2.0 aperture lens. What it misses out on is 4K video recording, which is inexplicably missing from the Xperia X Performance spec sheet, too.

We already got a chance to handle the Sony Xperia X a couple of months ago at MWC, so this time, we'll approach our hands-on with a focus on the camera department. We figured we'd spend the few precious moments we had with the phone on the important stuff.

Sony Xperia Z2, Z3 and Z3 Compact are getting official Marshmallow

Sony is delivering on its promise dating back to October last year to bring Android Marshmallow to the Xperia Z2, Xperia Z3 and Xperia Z3 Compact. After a Beta build was released a month ago, users of the smartphones are starting to receive the official update.

The firmware, carrying a build number 23.5.A.0.570, brings the OS version to the latest 6.0.1, and includes the February Android security patch as well as the latest camera app interface.
Sony Xperia Z2, Z3 and Z3 Compact are getting official Marshmallow
Now, there are the usual caveats, though. For one, only three models are getting the update for now, specifically the D6503 Z2, the D6603 Z3 and the D5803 Z3 Compact. Additionally, it's not yet happening in all parts of the world - so far it's the US, Russia, Ukraine, Middle East and North Africa, and perhaps Latin America.

So if you're holding on to your trusty Xperias of the above generations and live somewhere in these regions, you may be in luck. If not, muster some patience, it could be just a few days.

Apple may be going to LG as a primary supplier of dual-camera modules for initial batches of the iPhone 7

Japanese analysts from Nomura Securities have been quoted as saying. Sony, which was originally meant to be the main vendor, is facing lower-than-expected yield, as well as having to deal with the aftermath of the Kumamoto earthquakes in April, which affected the company's production facilities in the region.

Additionally, Nomura Securities predicts that Apple will opt for an optically stabilized camera on the regular-sized 4.7-inch iPhone 7, and not just the 7 Plus model. Both the iPhone 6 and iPhone 6s lacked OIS, while their 6 Plus and 6s Plus counterparts had the feature.

Eye-tracking virtual reality headset maker FOVE has closed an $11 million Series A led by Colopl VR Fund, with participation from the venture fund of Hon Hai (Foxconn), 2020, and Samsung Venture Investment.
FOVE has formed strategic partnerships with it new investors and will use its Series A to speed up mass manufacturing of its headset. Colopl, one of Japan’s largest game publishers, said in a statement that it will develop content for FOVE.
FOVE launched at Disrupt San Francisco in 2014, before raising $480,650 in a Kickstarter campaign. Last month, the Tokyo-based company said it will delay the shipment of its head mount display to fall 2016 because of difficulty sourcing some components. It was originally supposed to ship this month.
CEO and co-founder Yuka Kojima tells TechCrunch the fall 2016 shipment date is still on and that the company is “working very hard to secure the timeline.”
When FOVE does launch, the head mounted display faces competition from big VR players like HTC, Oculus, and Sony Playstation, as well as eye-tracking firms, including Eyefluence, Tobii, and SMI, which are working with headset manufacturers.
Kojima says that FOVE is also interested in licensing its eye-tracking tech to other head mount display makers and hopes to bring those deals to fruition earlier than its competitors. Its also developing new intellectual property related to eye-tracking and virtual reality and foveated rendering, which FOVE hopes will give it an additional edge.
