New Leaked Image Reveals Three New iPhones

Three New iPhones
Three New iPhones
As we have seen, the next iPhone devices have been revealed through some leaks that show the existence of three models for this year, although other sources claim that there are only two. Evan Blass, best known for his @evleaks user account, said the iPhone 7 will be announced by Apple in the week of September 12.

One of the latest information is a video that shows a comparison between the iPhone 7 and its Pro variant. In another leak @evleaks, sent by Twitter, it reinforced the idea that there will be only two new iPhone models that will be released this year. Blass says the iPhone 7 and iPhone 7 Plus models take names of internal codes “Sonora” and “Dos Palos”, respectively.

Today, again a new photograph was found on the Chinese social network site Weibo, the user page @KK, showing a family of three iPhone devices again. The devices in the image are supposed prototypes developed for companies who manufacture accessories for iPhone, allowing these third-party products are available for the latest releases immediately after being offered for sale.

Other photos published today on Weibo showed the Pro variant with dual camera modules. It is also interesting to note that, unlike previous leaks, these images show that the devices have the Apple logo printed on the back, indicating that they are closer to the final stage in development.

With these new images still in doubt: will the tech giant Apple announce two or three new iPhones this year? The most reliable rumors indicate that they are only two, however we can not forget that they are just like the rumors but should keep in mind that rumors are leaked by @evleaks.

As we don’t know the official announcement, which is scheduled to take place on 12th September, followed by the release to be on September 16. It is also worth remembering that some sources still believe that the iPhone 7 is actually for the year 2017 and in its place, and iPhone 6SE might be released in September.

Apple just dropped another iOS 10 public beta for you crazy testers

Apple just dropped another iOS
Apple just dropped another iOS 10 public beta for you crazy testers

This didn’t take long. Just a day after releasing the third iOS 10 developer beta, the second public beta of iOS 10 is now available to download. And of course, you won't have to pay $99 a year for a developer account. But things are still rough at this stage so I wouldn’t recommend installing it on your main phone just yet.

What’s new in iOS 10 exactly? The upcoming operating system features a massive Siri update with third-party integrations. While it’s going to be hard to see the end result during the beta as third-party developers haven’t released iOS 10 apps yet, it could have a big impact on the way you use your iPhone.

Apple has also unveiled a completely redesigned lock screen with rich notifications that can display tiny live widgets and a huge Photos app update with face recognition, deep learning categorization and intelligent photo albums. Apple Maps, Apple Music, HomeKit and the Phone app are also receiving updates. Finally, the company is overhauling the Messages app with many, many new features — an emojify feature, message effects, Slack-like feedback on messages, rich link previews and third-party extensions.

And yet, Apple plans to release iOS 10 this fall, which usually means September. So we’re still a couple of months away from the final release. If you can’t wait and want to see what it looks like, I wrote a preview so you don’t have to ruin your phone.

Apple Pay To Be Launched In Hong Kong

Right after launching in France, Apple Pay is now available in Hong Kong as well. As usual, only a few partnering banks are part of the launch, but the company expects to roll out support for more cards and stores over the coming months.

If you have a Visa or MasterCard credit card from HSBC, BOCHK, Hang Seng, DBS or Standard Chartered, you’re all covered. Just head over to the Wallet app on your iPhone, iPad, Apple Watch and soon Mac. BEA and HKT are next. American Express cards are also supported.

Dozens of stores already support Apple Pay, including all sorts of convenience stores. Apps that rely on Stripe or Braintree to process payments can now start accepting Apple Pay. Deliveroo, Foodpanda, Homeaway and others already flipped the switch.

Now, the only question is whether that will be enough in the land of the Octopus card. Everybody has a contactless Octopus card in Hong Kong already as you need it to use public transportation. This card also lets you pay for stuff in stores if they have an Octopus reader. It’s become a ubiquitous payment method.

Apple Pay is now available in 9 countries: the U.S., the U.K., Canada, Australia, China, Singapore, Switzerland, France and Hong Kong. Apple Pay is now processing five times the transaction volume of a year-ago. 10 million locations now support Apple Pay around the world. And of course, these numbers will only grow as Apple expands its payment service to new countries.

We already have a lot of messages pass by the look of the iPhone 7 and the absence of the headphone jack, but on the specifications of the inside is still little known. Today, we may have a first look at the performance of the iPhone 7, as it is apparent from the benchmarks.

iPhone 7 Will Be As Fast As The iPad Pro
iPhone 7 Will Be As Fast As The iPad Pro

iPhone 7 Will Be As Fast As The iPad Pro

As there appeared a rumor that the chips for the next generation iPhone, presumably the iPhone 7 and 7 Plus will be exclusively manufactured by the chip maker TSMC. Since then, it remained silent and we have virtually no further information concerning the Apple A10 soc. A Chinese Weibo user brings it possible today to change some details about the Apple A10, though it still would go to early test results of the chipset.

As we all know that the A9 chip in the iPhone 6s is produced by the both Samsung and TSMC, but Apple iPhone 7 would only have chosen the TSMC. This is partly due to the fuss surrounding the iPhone 6s chip, causing Samsung is slower than TSMC. The TSMC technology would also ensure that the chip can be made smaller, while performance is considerably improved. As the rumor says that Apple iPhone 7 would first make a lot thinner than the iPhone 6s, but this now will save only a fraction.

According to the new information to make the iPhone 7 and 7 Plus, the company will use the new Apple A10 soc. Earlier this week tests were launched and the new chipset again seems to be a bit faster, but the step at this time is not as great as in previous years.

On the benchmark app Geekbench 3, the A10 manage to achieve a single-core score of 3,000, about the same amount as the Apple A9X, which under the hood of the iPad Pro 9.7 and 12.9 can be found.

However, Apple A9 of the iPhone 6s and 6s Plus usually scores around 2500 points, which equates to a performance increase of about 18%. That percentage corresponds to the difference between the early benchmarks of the A8 and A9 last year. It is therefore possible in our eyes that the scores will be higher than the current case. The final difference between the A8 and A9 was less than 43%.

Another option is that Apple has more focused this year on improving the battery life by making the chip more efficient. Earlier this week we heard instance even though the iPhone 7 battery will have the capacity of 1960mAh, an increase of 11% compared to the 1750mAh battery of the iPhone 6s.

Talk to Amazon’s Alexa from your iPhone with this Lexi app

Lexi App lets you talk to Amazon’s Alexa from your iPhone

BlueToo Ventures has just released a new iOS app Lexi that now brings Amazon’s digital assistant Alexa to the iPhone. This app allows you to bypass Amazon’s Echo smart speakers and give a verbal command.

In other words, the iOS app mirrors the way Amazon’s personal assistant functions. It can be used to control the Echo speaker, which essentially means users can control smart devices, place orders as well as install and turn skills from the Alexa App. Further, Lexi also allows users to ask Alexa for information about the latest news, weather, movies or directions to the closest hospital, for instance. However, some features like Amazon Prime Music and audio books, still require the Echo hardware.

While users are required to have an Amazon account to sync, there is no need to buy an Echo, or any other third-party speaker with Alexa integration, such as the recent Triby. Using the app is very simple. All you need to do is just press and hold the screen while making a request, and then release to hear the confirmation response.

At present, Lexi is available for iOS only on App Store for $5, which is a grab-on offer compared to the $180 you would have to pay for the standard Echo speaker.

Last week Apple silently refreshed the 12-inch MacBook introduced in 2015. The new model gets a rose gold color option to keep up with the times, but also a sixth-generation Intel Core M processor, 1866MHz RAM, and the more efficient Intel HD 515 GPU.

And now the teardown experts over at iFixit have decided to open up the new model and see what's different on the inside. Truth be told, that's not much, but some of the minor changes are interesting.

The new MacBook looks identical to its predecessor from last year, and even their model number is the same: A1534. However, the EMC number is 2991 for the new laptop, compared to 2746 for the old one.

The lower case has Pentalobe screws like the original 12-inch MacBook, but a tri-wing screw featured in last year's model has been replaced by a standard Phillips screw, making it much more easy to work with. All the other internal screws are either Phillips or Torx.

That said, while the hinge screws do have Torx heads, these are filled with a mysterious substance that disintegrates when you insert a screwdriver. So Apple has brought tamper-evident screws to the new MacBook, unfortunately for those who like to tinker with their hardware yet would still prefer to keep that warranty intact.

The USB Type-C hardware has changed too, coming with new silicon and a new cable arrangement. The battery is 4% bigger (in capacity) than the one in last year's laptop, but in size it seems to be exactly the same.

The new 2016 12-inch MacBook received a repairability score of 1 out of 10, which is among the worst ever. The tamper-evident hinge screws are part of the reason why. What's more, the processor, RAM, and flash storage are soldered to the logic board, the battery assembly is very solidly glued to the lower case, and the display is fused, having no separate protective glass.

Android vs Apple iOS : Weak iPhone 6s sales see drop in iOS adoption

Android wins the battle against iOS, thanks to poor iPhone 6s sales

Apple is said to be going through an innovation crisis, as the company has hardly launched “revolutionary” products in the last couple of years. Further, the Silicon Valley giant is concentrating more on reinventing products that were designed a few years ago, which in turn has led to drop in adoption figures in major markets.

iOS also appears to have been affected by the poor demand for the iPhone 6s and 6s Plus, which were launched in September 2015 as revives of the core devices launched one year before.

With the drop in demand for new iPhones, which is expected to fall below the 200 million mark this year, more users are shifting to Android these days indicate new data provided by Kantar.

OS performance in the 3-month period ending Feb 2016OS performance in the 3-month period ending Feb 2016

With increase in Android’s domination and improved shares in almost every single country, Apple’s iOS has lost users in the biggest markets.
European performance

For example, in Europe, Android has achieved increases in every single market, attaining a growth of no less than 6.7 percent in the EU5 region (February 2015 versus February 2016).

The main change was noticed in Italy where Android enhanced its share by 12.1 percentage points, reaching a record 78.4 percent. On the other hand, in the same country, iOS actually lost 3.2 percent and dropped to 14.3 percent. In France, Android achieved a growth of 9.1 percent to settle at 71.8 percent, while iOS fell down by 1.7 percent to reach 19.9 percent.

However, Spain was the sole country where iOS actually bettered its share, as the platform went up 0.4 points to achieve 9.1 percent. Android also managed an increase of 2.0 percent to reach no more, no less than 90 percent. This implies that in Spain, 9 out of 10 phones are powered by Android, which is very impressive.
US performance

Even though US remains the key market for iOS, things are not shaping well for the operating system here either. At present, Android is working in 58.9 percent of the devices in the country, a 3.3 percent rise over February 2015, while iOS lost 0.5 percent of its share and dropped to 38.3 percent.

The other mobile platforms there don’t even count because Windows reduced to 2.2 percent from 2.6 percent, while the “Other” category went down to no less than 0.2 percent.

According to Kantar, current buyers are not interested to spend money on a high-end device and that’s why Android is growing so fast, as there are far more affordable choices when it comes to Google’s OS.

However, this news should not dishearten Apple, as the iPhone SE could also see growing sales and thus help the iOS recovery on the short term.

Lauren Guenveur, mobile analyst for Kantar Worldpanel ComTech explained, “In the US, the average spend on purchasing a smartphone in the three months ending February was $352. For Android buyers that meant that roughly 69% of consumers reported spend under $350, while for iOS buyers, that share was 39%. This represents a unique opportunity for the newly launched iPhone SE, which, at a $399 price point, will likely appeal to more cost-conscious first-time smartphone buyers who might otherwise be more inclined to pick up an Android smartphone, and to the sizable installed base of iPhone owners who have not yet upgraded.”

The open source VoIP engine and standards initiative, known as WebRTC, is finally starting to get some traction. Earlier this month, Slack followed Facebook Messenger’s lead and launched its voice calling feature based on WebRTC. Though exciting, this launch is limited — it only works within Slack’s desktop apps and Chrome.

We can presume it’s just in MVP mode and that Firefox support will come soon, given the minimal incremental effort to support that platform. Internet Explorer and Edge, its WebRTC-supporting upgrade, are likely a non-factor for Slack users. That leaves support for Apple’s Safari browser next on the list.

Does it matter that Safari does not support WebRTC? Safari has been lagging on the web for a while — does Apple even care?

 Apple?

Does WebRTC need Apple?

Safari has been a perennial thorn in WebRTC’s side. Depending on who is counting, Safari has roughly a 10-15 percent share of the total browser market across desktop and mobile. The stats don’t indicate that changing much over time. A flat 10-15 percent is not insignificant, but it’s not really big enough to get initial priority when developing a new web app. Does that change when your user base grows and you can afford to provide broader support?

Facebook certainly doesn’t seem to care. Try to make a call through the Messenger interface on the web with Safari and you’ll get this:

They don’t even attempt to hide the call buttons to prevent users from trying to make calls on Safari. They keep the phone and video call buttons there, enticing you to click so they can try to convince you to use another browser. If Facebook doesn’t care about supporting Safari for its 800-plus million Messenger users, it’s hard to make a case that anyone else should, too.

However, Safari is not a WebRTC developer’s biggest problem: Apple’s iOS policy is. Apple requires that you use its web-rendering engine. It doesn’t matter if you’re a small startup or Google with its Chrome browser: If you want to build an app that renders a web page, you need to use Apple’s WebView API.

Apple can monetize apps via the app store; it can’t monetize web visits through a browser.
There is no such thing as WebRTC on the mobile web for iOS. This means that Google and other developers can’t support WebRTC on iOS devices unless it’s built into a native iOS app. That is a serious blow to web advocates’ vision of a ubiquitous world wide web for all devices. From the App Store review guidelines: “Apps that browse the web must use the iOS WebKit framework and WebKit Javascript.”

Does Apple need WebRTC?

WEbtc techtouchz

Apple has its own VoIP app that it puts on all its devices — FaceTime. The FaceTime app works just fine on Apple devices without WebRTC. Steve Jobs mentioned in 2010 that Apple would move to make FaceTime an open standard. This could have mitigated the need for the WebRTC standard in the first place. Then, in 2012, Apple was sued by a patent troll around this tech and lost. Since then, Apple has kept quiet about opening FaceTime, and there is no reason to think that will change.

Apple’s web renderer policy on iOS has the effect of forcing WebRTC developers to create iOS apps for their devices. Apple can monetize apps via the app store; it can’t monetize web visits through a browser.

WebRTC is not the only casualty of Apple’s policy (see the full list versus Firefox here). Despite the low market risk in supporting many modern web features, Safari is way behind. Apple certainly has the resources to do whatever it wants. Its huge and growing backlog is certainly an indicator that the web hasn’t been a big priority. Even if this suddenly changed, WebRTC would be just one of many features competing for internal attention.

Apple being Apple, we will never really know what is going on until they are ready to announce something.
Historically, the world’s most valuable company has not had much incentive to do anything different. If Apple can survive by ignoring web, why would it care about a single web standard like WebRTC?

Can Apple buck the status quo forever?

The short answer is “no.” Apple’s strategy of dragging down the web, and making developers’ lives more difficult, cannot be sustained indefinitely. If it pushes too much against the status quo of the rest of the market, it risks alienating its constituents rather than endearing them.

Thanks to WebRTC, VoIP calling has moved from being a magical, technical feat that few could master, to an easy-to-add feature to any app. If Safari won’t support WebRTC, developers will likely direct those customers to something other than Safari, just as Facebook has done. Apple may not have ambitions of creating the No. 1 browser, but I’m sure they would still like Safari to be competitive. With Google, Amazon, Snapchat and now Slack providing WebRTC as a feature, we’re at the point where many developers want to do the same.

Apple also has pressure on the iOS app-development front. Building WebRTC for iOS from the source repositories is a lot easier than it used to be, but it’s still not as simple as using the web APIs. To get there, WebRTC really needs to be added to iOS’s native web view, just like it is in Android with Google.

Of course, there are always third-party libraries to help in the interim, but third party and commercial is never as attractive as free and native to developers.

Does Apple want to change?

Guess what? Apple has been spotted advertising WebRTC developer roles for WebKit (its web rendering engine).

It seems Apple really is feeling the pressure. This is certainly good news for web and WebRTC advocates. Community efforts like webrtcinwebkit.org should make it much easier for Apple’s new WebRTC engineers when they are hired.

Apple being Apple, we will never really know what is going on until they are ready to announce something. Still, it seems WebRTC’s initial vision of universal browser support will be a reality at some point in the near future. It just goes to show, you can’t ignore your customers’ demands forever.

Apple’s newest addition to the iPhone family may be its cheapest phone yet at $399, but the four-inch iPhone SE isn’t likely to move the needle in emerging markets, where the lion’s share of growth in the handset industry lies.
A report from Gartner found that global smartphone sales have reached their slowest growth rate since 2008 as smartphone saturation sets in, particularly in Western markets. That general slowdown, which has been impacted by China, has sent many phone companies in search of growth potential in nascent markets like India, Southeast Asia and Latin America — regions were consumers are particularly price sensitive but smartphone volumes are rising.
Apple has faced many calls from investors and industry watchers to release a more wallet-friendly device to capture new users in such growth markets, but the iPhone SE is not that phone. Apple is never likely to move into the mass market bracket of places like India, where the majority of handset volume is sub-$100, but the new release does offer something new.
The iPhone SE marries the innards of Apple’s top-of-the-range iPhone 6S, including the same 12-megapixel camera and 4K video capture, with a four-inch form factor at snip of the $549 starting price of the 6S.
That’s unlikely to make a dent in China, where the market has long moved to larger, “phablet”-sized devices which are preferred for video, entertainment and other such activities. Apple’s previous stab at a mid-range phone — the ill-fated iPhone 5c — didn’t go down well in China where it was perceived as cheap. The iPhone SE has evoked a similar reaction in China, where users of microblogging site Weibo have christened it ‘The Red iPhone,’ in homage to Xiaomi’s Redmi sub-$100 affordable range, the Wall Street Journal reported.

An iPhone For India?

The iPhone SE may not satisfy mainstream tastes in China, but it may have more luck in India.
At the iPhone SE launch event yesterday Apple revealed that it sold 30 million iPhone 5s units last year alone, and the device — first launched in 2013 and clearly the model for the iPhone SE — performed particular well in India.
“When Apple lowered the iPhone 5s price in Q4 2014 to nearly $300 [from an initial $500], [its] contribution [to the total number of iPhone sales in India] went up from single digits to nearly 43 percent,” Tarun Pathak, an analyst at Counterpoint Research, told TechCrunch in an interview.
That rise in demand showed that Indian consumers are willing “to lock themselves into the Apple ecosystem” even if it involved buying a two-year-old phone, Pathak added.
Putting more advanced technology into that same form factor at a similarly low price could offer the best of all worlds, but Pathak isn’t quite so bullish on the iPhone SE. That’s because the big problem for Apple is price. The iPhone SE that is billed as starting at $399 will sell from around $599 in India.
Higher pricing for Apple products isn’t new in India. Thanks to taxes and other fees, India was the most expensive country to buy an iPhone 6S and iPhone 6S plus last year. Apple, which sells in India via channel partners since it isn’t permitted to run its own retail business in the country, subsequently cut costs, but, in a price sensitive market with much competition, the markup may cut into the phone’s potential.

Heaping On Costs

A highly specced iPhone at $300 may be a snip, but once a device is priced around $500 it requires a buyer with a certain level of spending power. Inevitably, at $500, that person has the capacity to spend a little more and, since many in Asia are moving towards larger devices, that means less of a need to compromise screen size for price.
Indeed, Apple’s own portfolio could provide competition to its new phone.
“Because the price of the iPhone 6 [and iPhone 6 plus] already dropped in India, Apple is directly competing with its own phone which might be more appealing to consumers,” IDCanalyst Kiranjeet Kaur told TechCrunch, referencing the fact that, like China, Indian consumers are increasingly interested in larger screen iPhones.
iPhone SE - iPhone 6s Plus - 13
The iPhone SE compared to the iPhone 6S plus
The iPhone 6 retails at upwards of $800 brand new in India, that’s not a lot more, while a pre-used model could cost hundreds of dollars less. Counterpoint’s Pathak said Apple is applying for a license to sell the iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 plus refurbished in India, an eventuality that could see the devices retail from stores for around the same price that the iPhone SE currently occupies in India. (Apple has also applied for its own retail stores in India, which would give it greater price control.)
When faced with the choice of a larger phone for the same price as the iPhone SE, analysts believe aspirational consumers may choose the latter. Or, at least, that there is a decision will impact Apple’s new phone.
“In emerging countries, we are not very convinced that [the iPhone SE] will generate volume,” Pathak said. His firm, Counterpoint Research, estimates that Apple has around 4.5 million active iPhones in India, that’s nearly 15 times lower than its userbase in China and just a fraction of India’s billion-plus population.
“It may be a short growth spurt not a long-term one,” IDC’s Kaur said, slightly more optimistically of the new iPhone. “But I don’t believe it will create a new segment for Apple” in emerging markets.
There is some cause for optimism though, as part of Apple’s wider efforts.
Counterpoint’s Pathak is of the belief that the new device, while unlikely to be universally appealing, may entice some new price-conscious users to Apple.
“People in India are aspirational. Those locked into the ecosystem via a low price device may upgrade later. That’s an important market for Apple. In two, three or four years, the same young population will have increased affordability,” he said.

Western Market Potential

The device is likely to perform better in Western countries, where fewer consumers desire large screened phones and many have held on to the iPhone 5s in the face of newer product releases from Apple. The iPhone SE would give them a taste of Apple’s newest technology — such as Touch ID — without forcing them to adopt a new form factor.
But price is unlikely to be a key motivator in markets like the U.S., where consumers typically choose either high-end premium devices or budget phones. The move away from fully subsidized devices could play in the iPhone SE’s favor but, then again, U.S. consumers are adopting monthly payment plans for their phones which enables them to buy more expensive flagship devices as they do with contract deals.
Just banking primarily on small phone lovers in the West might not equate to volume either. Consumer Intelligence Research told Recode that it expects Apple to sell fewer than six million iPhone SE units in its first year, with the company’s high-end offerings likely to be more appealing to consumers.
