 WHAT IS NEXT ABOUT COMPUTER?

The computing industry progresses in two mostly independent cycles: financial and product cycles. There has been a lot of handwringing lately about where we are in the financial cycle. Financial markets get a lot of attention. They tend to fluctuate unpredictably and sometimes wildly. The product cycle by comparison gets relatively little attention, even though it is what actually drives the computing industry forward. We can try to understand and predict the product cycle by studying the past and extrapolating into the future.

New computing eras have occurred every 10–15 years

Tech product cycles are mutually reinforcing interactions between platforms and applications. New platforms enable new applications, which in turn make the new platforms more valuable, creating a positive feedback loop. Smaller, offshoot tech cycles happen all the time, but every once in a while — historically, about every 10 to 15 years — major new cycles begin that completely reshape the computing landscape.

Financial and product cycles evolve mostly independently

The PC enabled entrepreneurs to create word processors, spreadsheets, and many other desktop applications. The internet enabled search engines, e-commerce, e-mail and messaging, social networking, SaaS business applications, and many other services. Smartphones enabled mobile messaging, mobile social networking, and on-demand services like ride sharing. Today, we are in the middle of the mobile era. It is likely that many more mobile innovations are still to come.
Each product era can be divided into two phases: 1) the gestation phase, when the new platform is first introduced but is expensive, incomplete, and/or difficult to use, 2) the growth phase, when a new product comes along that solves those problems, kicking off a period of exponential growth.
The Apple II was released in 1977 (and the Altair in 1975), but it was the release of the IBM PC in 1981 that kicked off the PC growth phase PC sales per year (thousands)
The internet’s gestation phase took place in the 80s and early 90s when it was mostly a text-based tool used by academia and government. The release of the Mosaic web browser in 1993 started the growth phase, which has continued ever since.

Worldwide internet users

There were feature phones in the 90s and early smartphones like the Sidekick and Blackberry in the early 2000s, but the smartphone growth phase really started in 2007–8 with the release of the iPhone and then Android. Smartphone adoption has since exploded: about 2B people have smartphones today. By 2020, 80% of the global population will have one.

Worldwide smartphone sales per year (millions)
If the 10–15 year pattern repeats itself, the next computing era should enter its growth phase in the next few years. In that scenario, we should already be in the gestation phase. There are a number of important trends in both hardware and software that give us a glimpse into what the next era of computing might be. Here I talk about those trends and then make some suggestions about what the future might look like.
Hardware: small, cheap, and ubiquitous
In the mainframe era, only large organizations could afford a computer. Minicomputers were affordable by smaller organization, PCs by homes and offices, and smartphones by individuals.

Computers are getting steadily smaller

We are now entering an era in which processors and sensors are getting so small and cheap that there will be many more computers than there are people.
There are two reasons for this. One is the steady progress of the semiconductor industry over the past 50 years (Moore’s law). The second is what Chris Anderson calls “the peace dividend of the smartphone war”: the runaway success of smartphones led to massive investments in processors and sensors. If you disassemble a modern drone, VR headset, or IoT devices, you’ll find mostly smartphone components.
In the modern semiconductor era, the focus has shifted from standalone CPUs to bundles of specialized chips known as systems-on-a-chip Computer prices have been steadily dropping
Typical systems-on-a-chip bundle energy-efficient ARM CPUs plus specialized chips for graphics processing, communications, power management, video processing, and more.

1 GHz Linux computer for $5

This new architecture has dropped the price of basic computing systems from about $100 to about $10. The Raspberry Pi Zero is a 1 GHz Linux computer that you can buy for $5. For a similar price you can buy a wifi-enabled microcontroller that runs a version of Python. Soon these chips will cost less than a dollar. It will be cost-effective to embed a computer in almost anything.
Meanwhile, there are still impressive performance improvements happening in high-end processors. Of particular importance are GPUs (graphics processors), the best of which are made by Nvidia. GPUs are useful not only for traditional graphics processing, but also for machine learning algorithms and virtual/augmented reality devices. Nvidia’s roadmap promises significant performance improvements in the coming years.

Google’s quantum computer

A wildcard technology is quantum computing, which today exists mostly in laboratories but if made commercially viable could lead to orders-of-magnitude performance improvements for certain classes of algorithms in fields like biology and artificial intelligence.
Software: the golden age of AI
There are many exciting things happening in software today. Distributed systems is one good example. As the number of devices has grown exponentially, it has become increasingly important to 1) parallelize tasks across multiple machines 2) communicate and coordinate among devices. Interesting distributed systems technologies include systems like Hadoop and Spark for parallelizing big data problems, and Bitcoin/blockchain for securing data and assets.
But perhaps the most exciting software breakthroughs are happening in artificial intelligence (AI). AI has a long history of hype and disappointment. Alan Turing himself predicted that machines would be able to successfully imitate humans by the year 2000. However, there are good reasons to think that AI might now finally be entering a golden age.
“Machine learning is a core, transformative way by which we’re rethinking everything we’re doing good. Google CEO, Sundar Pichai
A lot of the excitement in AI has focused on deep learning, a machine learning technique that was popularized by a now famous 2012 Google project that used a giant cluster of computers to learn to identify cats in YouTube videos. Deep learning is a descendent of neural networks, a technology that dates back to the 1940s. It was brought back to life by a combination of factors, including new algorithms, cheap parallel computation, and the widespread availability of large data sets.

ImageNet challenge error rates (red line = human performance)

It’s tempting to dismiss deep learning as another Silicon Valley buzzword. The excitement, however, is supported by impressive theoretical and real-world results. For example, the error rates for the winners of the ImageNet challenge — a popular machine vision contest — were in the 20–30% range prior to the use of deep learning. Using deep learning, the accuracy of the winning algorithms has steadily improved, and in 2015 surpassed human performance.
Many of the papers, data sets, and software tools related to deep learning have been open sourced. This has had a democratizing effect, allowing individuals and small organizations to build powerful applications. WhatsApp was able to build a global messaging system that served 900M users with just 50 engineers, compared to the thousands of engineers that were needed for prior generations of messaging systems. This “WhatsApp effect” is now happening in AI. Software tools like Theano and TensorFlow, combined with cloud data centers for training, and inexpensive GPUs for deployment, allow small teams of engineers to build state-of-the-art AI systems.
For example, here a solo programmer working on a side project used TensorFlow to colorize black-and-white photos:

Now You Can Play Pokemon Go On Windows 10 Mobile
As we all know that the Pokemon Go is a location-based augmented reality game developed and published by Niantic. Pokemon Go crazily stormed the planet and now there are very few countries and the operating systems are just left to have this game, and among them, Windows platform is the one.

Windows 10 Mobile was the platform where the Pokémon Go was not yet available, but now you can install and play Pokemon Go on Windows 10 Mobile. But all thanks to an Open Source client, which made it possible for all the Windows Phone users to play Pokemon Go on Windows 10 Mobile.

See how you can finally have the Pokémon Go on your Windows 10 Mobile.

The PoGo-UWP, as it is not the official application of Niantic but already gives the possibility for users of Windows 10 Mobile to have the Pokémon Go on their smartphones. This is an open source client which is accessible to all.

The PoGo-UWP is not yet officially completed and published in the Windows application store, so, for now it requires users to install manually. If you still want to help to test the app and contribute to development, then you will need to follow few advanced steps, but don’t get worried about the advance steps, as the steps are not as advance that you might be thinking.

So let’s get started:-

  • Login via the official Android or iOS client or simply you can also use the Bluestacks app player directly on your PC.
  • Then select a starting Pokemon and log out from the official app by tapping on the Pokeball icon.
  • If you are on Bluestacks without a GPS signal then just close the app by pressing the ‘X’ icon.
  • Now you have to download all these Github files to a PC connected to the same Wi-Fi network as your Windows 10 Mobile and have to place them in the same folder. (Here is the files 1st – 2nd – 3rd)
  • Now enable developer features and to do this just go to Settings and search “For developers”.
  • Then simply enable the “Developer mode, Device discovery, and Device Portal”.

The really interesting reason why ATM PINs have a 4 digit code

ATM PINs
Have you ever wondered why ATM PINs have 4 digit Code? Here is why

You walk into your friendly neighborhood ATM kiosk and swipe your card. You then punch in a 4 PIN code to authenticate yourself and proceed to withdraw money. You may have been doing this mechanically since the day ATM was introduced but have you given a thought why ATM PINs have a 4 digit code?  No! Then read on..

Automated Teller Machines (ATM) were first introduced in 1967 and now have emerged as a best option to disburse cash. Instead of visiting your bank and waiting in a long queue to withdraw money, you just have to swipe your ATM card, punch in your secret 4 digit PIN and take away the money you require.

But if someone was to find or steal your card, the only barrier protecting your money is your 4-digit ATM PIN. Ever wondered why most PINs have only 4 digits? Given that an ATM dishes out money wouldnt the manufacturers of ATMS have been wiser to introduce a longish PIN say six digit or eight digit one. Isn’t that why our email passwords are also expected to be 6 letters or more?

You see there is a bit of story behind it. ATM was invented by a wellknown Scottish inventor John Adrian Shepherd-Barron, the man who pioneered the development of the ATM machine. Barron was born in Shillong and was son to a Wimbledon ladies doubles champion, Dorothy Barron. When testing out his invention, Barron had also proposed a 6-digit PIN.

However, the first person to use his invention was his wife, Caroline. We all know that behind every successful man is a woman, and Caroline apparently rejected the idea of using a six code PIN for her husband’s invention because she could only remember the numbers up to four.

When Barron came up with the idea when he realised that he could remember his six-figure army number. But he decided to check that with his wife, Caroline.

“Over the kitchen table, she said she could only remember four figures, so because of her, four figures became the world standard,” he laughs.

Reportedly, 6 numbers stringed together were too much information for her to recall.

Although, there are many banks nowadays that offer 6 digit PINs for security purposes, shouldn’t those of us using 4 digit PINs be thanking Caroline? It gets tough to recall those 4 digits at times, imagine what 6 or more would do to us?

Android 7.0 Nougat
Android 7.0 Nougat could be release as soon as next month

If you have been keeping track of Google's work on the next major Android update, then you have surely noticed that the search giant is definitely pushing thing along a lot faster this time around. Instead of waiting for Google I/O 2016, the first developer preview builds of the OS came out on March 9, two moths or so earlier than expected. It was only after a quite popular crows-sourced naming campaign that Android 7.0 received its official Nougat desert title and that was held off quite a bit until July 1.

So it would appear Google is definitely on a new schedule this time around and the main goal seems to be to get the OS into developer's hands as soon as possible all the while perfecting and adding features on the go and dealing with PR. Now that the fifth and final Preview build is out everybody is anxiously anticipating the official release. It only makes sense to keep to momentum going and a new report by Evan Blass (@evleaks) claims Google will do just that and stick to the initially promised time frame and deliver its build by the end of September.
This is definitely great news and also fits nicely with some third-party update schedules that we have been hearing about, as well as a reoccurring rumor that the Samsung Galaxy Note 7 will come out running Android Nougat on August 2. Naturally, however, Nexus users will be first in line for the new desert update and according to Evan Blass, Google intends to offer official support for every device that came out after the Nexus 5. That is bad news for owners of the three year old handset, but we can't really blame Google for moving on, plus the modding community is sure to hook it up with ROMs in no time.

As already mentioned, Android Nougat is still in active development and historically features from preview builds don't always make it in full and to the very last one in a final release. That being said, besides the Name and the somewhat odd cat-catching Easter egg game, we can't really provide a list of new features with any certainty. However, there are quite a few potential candidates to be excited about.

For instance, Nexus 6P beta testers got to play around with something called Sustained Performance Mode (SPM), which should allow app developers to inform the system of the resources a certain task will take up, as well as its duration and have Android manage to load better and save some battery in the process. Also, there have been signs of a new seamless OS update feature, effectively using a second partition for the process and then simply switching over to it once its done without the long wait. Also better multi-language support is anticipated and so are a few other less-popular changes, like the removal of the Dark Theme and Desktop shortcuts.

Xiaomi VR
Xiaomi could release a VR headset of its own on August 1

If you have ever poked around online for Xiaomi tech, then you surely know that the Chinese OEM always had a "take a jab at everything and see what sticks" attitude to the market. Routers, TVs, smart home gear, even a drone and most-recently the Mi Notebook Air laptop, you name it and Xiaomi likely has it in its portfolio. And when you boast ambitions to play in the big leagues, you really can't afford to lack behind on a tech craze, which VR has been emerging as for a few years now.

Xiaomi could release a VR headset of its own on August 1

New teaser images spotted on the company's official Weibo page now hint that Xiaomi might try its hand at a VR headset. Apparently it has been in the works for some time as well, since industry sources have also suggested a release date of August 1, which is only a short weekend away and this is practically the first time we have heard about the gadget.

As for the images in question, they mostly feature writing in Chinese, that we can't exactly make out in full. However, there are clear mentions of both VR and the August 1 date present as well. Going by the small lifestyle picture of the alleged device, it appears to be quite similar to Samsung's Gear VR in terms of design. This, along with the apparent lack of cables coming out of the unit likely means that Xiaomi has gone with a smartphone-powered approach as well.

Overall, it is slightly odd that we are hearing about this VR headset only now, but Xiaomi is no stranger to surprise announcements. Plus, a dedicated Xiaomi VR account (@XiaomiVR) was found on Weibo as well, which offers some extra proof. Also, this fits nicely with rumors of an ongoing effort on the company's part to launch a rich suite of VR software and experiences, alongside the hardware, probably under the XiaomiVR title as an extra incentive for prospective buyers.

PokeFit

Pokemon Go is definitely big enough to start generating its own ecosystem, and one new Android app hints at how far things could go beyond simply crafting a better Pokedex. PokeFitgives PoGo trainers a dashboard overlaid on their game screen to track play time, distance travelled, steps walked and energy burned.

PokeFit, from P3 communications, helps trainers get a real-time grasp on the positive health benefits they’re getting by playing Pokemon Go. The app itself keeps a log of your sessions, giving you a breakdown of how long each lasted and how much distance you traversed during your trip, and when you’re using Pokemon Go, it displays a small rectangular frame in the upper left corner of your screen, providing quick access to info at a glance. You can also turn off the display but still track your stats for review later if you’d rather go for the pure PoGo experience.

The app has another special power trainers will welcome: You can use it to override your screen’s timeout settings, keeping the display on Android devices from going dark while you’re out tracking down your ‘mons. The app also tracks battery usage and data spent while playing Pokemon Go, which might be eye-opening info for frequent players.

One other interesting thing PokeFit does is keep route maps of your game sessions, overlaid on Google Maps. It’s a pretty standard feature for apps like MapMyRun, but interesting to see here provided, of course, you’re okay with making that data available to the developer.

Other apps are similarly interesting in adding features to Pokemon Go, particularly on Android where there’s more flexibility for concurrent applications. LookOut!, for instance, offers a live video feed (with quite a bit of lag, sadly) at the top of your display overlaid on Pokemon Go (and other apps) to give players a look at what’s in front of them, so they don’t walk into traffic or fall down a well.

I still think it’s early days for Pokemon Go in terms of interest and sustained popularity, so expect to see more of these types of applications. We’ll check back in about six months and see if anyone’s managed to build a sustainable business strictly operating within the market of Pokemon Go players.

It’s Payback Time: Angry employee shut down 90% of Citibank servers

 shutting down banks server
Citibank Sysadmin gets 21 months in prison for intentionally shutting down banks server

“Often, the right path is the one that may be the hardest for you to follow. But the hard path is also the one that will make you grow as a human being” – Karen Mueller Coombs

As an employee at any job, you can’t help but feel sometimes that you are a victim of the unresolved issues of one boss or another – bullies. This leads to a lot of resentment in the employees, which in turn makes them take drastic steps knowingly or unknowingly.

Such, is the case of a Dallas man who worked at Citibank Regents Campus in Irving, Texas, in 2012 and 2013. On Monday, a Texas judge sentenced Lennon Ray Brown, 38, to 21 months in federal prison for intentionally deleting the configuration of nine out of ten Citibank routers, causing the bank’s entire network to go down for hours in December 2013. He has also been ordered to pay $77,200 in restitution.

Brown, who worked for Citibank first as a contract employee in Texas’s branch and then started working as a full-time employee from February 2013 pleaded guilty to an indictment charging one count of intentional damage to a protected computer in February 2016. Brown’s responsibilities in his job as a computer engineer were to manage the bank’s IT network.

According to court papers, on December 23, 2013, he was called upon by his supervisor earlier in the day and lectured by one of his bosses for his poor work performance. Later during the same day, authorities say that Brown waited for working hours to finish. At approximately 6:03 p.m. that evening, Brown knowingly transmitted a code and command to 10 core Citibank Global Control Center routers, and by transmitting that code, wiped out the running configuration files in nine of the routers. However, his intention was to wipe out all of the bank’s ten central routers, but the code executed only on nine of the servers. Approximately 90% of all Citibank networks across North America were affected due to the loss of connectivity. At 6:05 p.m. that evening, Brown swiped his ID card through the gate to exit the Citibank Regents Campus and went home.

The Court referred to Brown’s behaviour as “criminal vandalism” in the sentencing hearing this Monday. The authorities also read a text that Brown sent to a co-worker immediately after he shut down Citibank’s system, “They was firing me. I just beat them to it. Nothing personal, the upper management need to see what they guys on the floor is capable of doing when they keep getting mistreated. I took one for the team. Sorry if I made my peers look bad, but sometimes it take something like what I did to wake the upper management up.”

After the Xiaomi Redmi Pro, the Chinese OEM threw another device our way - the Mi Notebook Air. To be completely honest, the laptop announcement was somewhat expected as well.

 Mi Notebook Air
The Mi Notebook Air is a MacBook competitor that won't leave you wanting
It comes in two sizes - 13.3-inch and 12.5-inch. Both feature metal shells, 1080p displays and slim glass-covered bezels. The former actually looks closer to the MacBook Pro series. It is just 14.8mm thick and weighs 1.28kg, while still managing to fit an Intel Core i5-6200U inside, along with 8GB of DDR4 RAM and 256GB of PCIe SSD storage. Xiaomi has even left a free SATA slot for some extra storage, provided that you allow the OEM to install it for you, as the laptop is not user-servicable.

The 13.3-inch model also has a dedicated 1GB NVIDIA GeForce 940MX GPU. It is not exactly a gamer's dream, but sure is better than relying on integrated graphics alone. The device is powered by a 40W battery pack, which should last up to 9.5 hours and can be quick charged with the bundled USB Type-C charger from zero to 50% in 30 minutes.

Mi Notebook Air
The Mi Notebook Air is a MacBook competitor that won't leave you wanting

And if you tend to put an emphasis on lightness and portability instead of performance, then the 12.5-inch model is probably a better suited option for you. It brings the total weight down to only 1.07kg, which does sadly come at a cost. The processor is bumped down to an Intel Core m3, RAM is set at 4GB and there is a 128GB SATA SSD by default, although Xiomi says even the smaller one has a free PCIe slot, that it can fill with extra storage on request.

The dedicated GPU is gone as well and there is a slight reduction in ports. Instead of 2 USB 3.0 ones, like on the bigger model, you only get one, but the HDMI port is still present. With all that hardware shed, the manufacturer also claims battery life should be around two hours longer.

Probably the best part about the the new Mi Notebook Air models is their price, especially when compared to their obvious Apple counterparts. The 13.3-inch one will set you back CNY 4999 or about $750, while its smaller sibling starts at CNY 3,499 or $520. This is about has as much as the Apple MacBook, but as with all Xiaomi products, it is worth noting that availability is still a big issue and prices tend to go up outside of China. Even sp, the Mi Notebook Air looks like a solid entry in the growing ultralight Windows laptop market, provided you can get your hands on one.

Samsung's upcoming Galaxy Note 7 has been the subject of countless rumors, and a new image allegedly reveals what it will look like.

Galaxy Note 7 allegedly revealed in image
Galaxy Note 7 allegedly revealed in image

The image -- a drawing, not a photo -- was tweeted by known leaker @evleaks, aka Evan Blass. The device in the image features a dual curved display, which backs up previous reports of such a screen. If true, the Note 7 would be the first Galaxy Note phablet to sport a wraparound screen, which has popped up on prior Samsung phones, such as the Galaxy S6 Edge, the Galaxy S6 Edge+ and the Galaxy S7 Edge. A phablet is a hybrid of a phone and tablet, or a large-screen phone.

Samsung had been in a slump for a couple of years, struggling with sluggish smartphone sales. But hot demand for the Galaxy S7 lineup has helped revive business this year. The company may be hoping the same magic works with the new Galaxy Note, especially if the curved display proves a draw for consumers.

The image also displays the familiar S-Pen stylus used to scribble notes and drawings on the screen. The physical home button would likely be outfitted with the phone's fingerprint sensor, though rumors say the Note 7 will also include an iris scanner for added security.

A standard 3.5mm audio jack, a USB port, a microphone, a speaker and the housing for the S Pen Stylus can also be seen in the alleged image.

Blass added a tagline to the image, saying that "Samsung's Galaxy Note 7 is a big bet that may pay off for the entire industry." That's a hefty boast, and it's not clear exactly what he's referencing. But the dual curved display could be the most enticing new feature for the Note 7, and one that may wend its way to more phones from Samsung as well as other manufacturers.

We'll know exactly what the next Galaxy Note will look like in a couple of weeks. Samsung is due to unveil the new device at a launch event in New York City on August 2.

This obviously made us think that it's going to be a slightly enhanced version of the F1 that's been available since January.

Now Oppo has put out another teaser image for the F1s (still not showing us the handset itself from any angle yet), and as you can see this
contains an important bit of new information.

It turns out that the Oppo F1s will be announced on August 3. Furthermore, it is being called a "selfie expert" by the Chinese company, so perhaps we should expect a better front-facing camera than we saw in the F1. Yet for now it's unclear exactly how it will be better, though.

Thanks for the tip, Kolman!

Awesome! Check Out The New 2017 Porsche Panamera

There's no getting around the fact that the old Panamera was a hippo of a thing. It wasn't pretty at all. In its many guises it was very fast, very efficient and very...Porsche, but to accuse it of beauty would be doing the word a disservice.

Other than the look, very little needed improving, but Porsche has decided to make the whole thing better anyway. A quick chat with Dr. Gernot Doellner, head of all things Panamera, revealed some things we knew, and a couple that we didn't.

It's all-new

The new Panamera is all new, all the time. From the base components to the exterior, there's nary a hint of old Panamera in there. Well, aside from one thing: Dr. Doellner and team know the concept is pretty perfect. Four big seats in a big car to go big distances (presumably to make big decisions about big business). As such, it's new, but still kind of familiar.

It brings the pretty

C'mon, they had to make it prettier. There's no way it could have gotten much worse, right? Porsche's aim here was to bring its silhouette closer in line with the 911 -- one of the most recognizable profiles in the automotive world. Even though the new car is bigger than the old in every dimension, it looks smaller than the old car. And it's much better looking -- smoother, sleeker, better.

Man, it's fast

The Turbo S will lap the Nurburgring in 7:38, which is faster than a Mercedes-McLaren SLR. It managed the run on normal road tires, too. The Turbo does come with 550 horses and a 4.0-liter, twin-turbocharge V-8 that'll hurl it from 0-60mph in just 3.4 seconds, so if it was slow it'd be a heck of a surprise. There are other models coming out at launch, as well: The 4S for the US and a diesel model for Europe. They're both pretty perky too.

Technology is king
The inside is suspiciously buttonless. It's bizarre, considering how many of the things blight the first-generation car, but it's all about touch-panel tomfoolery now. That's an advantage for two reasons: One, no blank plates to show your friends that you're a bit cheap; two, you can do a lot more with the space. It also looks super cool. With the features on offer in the new car, Dr. Doellner said that traditional buttons would have swamped the cabin and been impractical. Now, they don't need to worry about it.

Darkness isn't a problem any more, either, as the new car can see in the dark, pick out possible hazards and alert the driver to their presence.

Its lights are smart, as well. For non-US models, there's an LED matrix setup that can selectively light bits of the road for you. It can sense an oncoming car, make sure the relevant parts of the light don't dazzle the other driver but keep as much of it lit as possible. Smart stuff. And, of course, it'll be stuffed with more safety tech than you can shake a stick at.

It's built in the same place as the Carrera GT

Porsche's Leipzig factory is pretty sweet. There's a museum full of Porsche's greatest cars, a super clean (and super new) building designed just for bolting the Panamera together, a test track with a replica of Laguna Seca's corkscrew turn and a pretty well-stocked gift shop. Most importantly: They used to build the Carrera GT there.

Ford's rolling out an all-new Super Duty line of heavy-duty pickups this year

2017 Ford F-Series
2017 Ford F-Series
Ford's just released the figures for its 2017 Super Duty lineup, and I don't think I've ever seen this many "class-leading" claims in a single press release.

In F-450 trim, the Super Duty's maximum gooseneck towing capacity is 32,500 pounds. Fifth-wheel towing is a best-in-class 27,500 pounds, and conventional towing also earns a class-leading claim at 21,000 pounds. Need to throw a bunch of stuff in the bed? Not a problem, as the F-350 is payload-rated up to 7,630 pounds -- yet another best-in-class figure. (The F-250 has a max payload of 4,200 pounds.)

Whether you're driving an F-250, F-350 or F-450, if you opt for the 6.7-liter PowerStroke diesel V-8, you can look forward to a best-in-class 925 pound-feet of torque. The gas V-8 puts out less than half that much, but its 430-pound-feet output is -- yes, again -- best in class.

The F-Series Super Duty also touts several segment-exclusive technologies. Its adaptive cruise control system works with the heaviest trailers, as does its forward collision-warning system, which will precharge the brake pedal to speed up the process of slowing down. Cameras give the driver a 360-degree view of the vehicle while towing, and there's also a first-of-its-kind trailer camera that you can place wherever's most appropriate.

The Super Duty lineup goes on sale this fall, and pricing starts at $33,730 for an F-250 with a standard cab.

Xiaomi's rumoured upcoming Mi Notebook's images and specifications has been leaked. The Xiaomi laptop is similar to MacBook Air in terms of its appearance but it will use USB-C instead of using Thunderbolt.

According to the leaked thought-image, the upcoming laptop will have the following specs:

1. Skylake processor – Intel Core i7-6500U
2. 2 cores, 4 threads, base clock speed 2.50GHz, Turbo speed 3.10GHz.
3. 8GB RAM.
4. 11" and 13" screen size variants.
5. Supported with Windows 10 operating system.

According to this leak's source, the laptops will not come equipped with a touch screen and would be using Intel Atom processors to cut down the device cost. However, this leak might have a negative effect on the products. It's also believed that the variants will only differ in size but will have similar specs across devices.

The Chinese computer company will be holding a grand unveiling event at the China National Convention Center in Beijing on July 27. It was rumoured that both the notebooks have announced at this event. We expect to get more details about the products and their specifications at this event.

Pokédex case keeps your phone powered up so that you can catch ’em all!

Pokédex case
Pokédex case

An aspiring Pokémon master by the name of NPOOLE has found a creative way to inch one step closer towards his goal. He has posted a blogpost detailing his creation on SparkFun and printed a Pokédex external battery and case to combat the game’s already legendary drain on their Galaxy S4’s resources.

The case utilizes a bit of 3D printing and three affordable components—a lithium ion battery, USB breakout, and power cell—to not only store your phone in style but also charge it. The total cost to build the charging station itself is less than $40.

NPOOLE says this is just the first iteration; he plans on adding cooling fans and extra batteries to the next revision. In the meantime you can download the design from Github if you want to 3D-print your own, and check out the original source below for more info.

Tonight SpaceX successfully recovered yet another rocket, making it their fifth one in total.

Elon Musk’s rocket company launched their two-stage Falcon 9 vehicle from Cape Canaveral at 9:45 pm PT tonight and subsequently recovered the first stage of that rocket back on land. The landing marks the second time SpaceX recovered a rocket on land and their fifth recovered first stage in all.

The Falcon 9 first stage was returned to what was known as “Landing Zone 1” in Cape Canaveral, Florida, about eight minutes after launch.

SpaceX had previously completed four successful rocket recoveries in all: one on land, and three on a drone ship out at sea. Today was the first time SpaceX attempted to bring a rocket back to land since their successful land-based recovery back in December.

Ideally, SpaceX would always be able to attempt rocket landings on solid ground. A landing pad on solid ground is more stable than one at sea. Plus, if you have to land a rocket at sea there’s an additional time and cost of having to move it onto land after the launch.

Unfortunately, however, a land-based recovery is not always a possibility. For example, today was SpaceX’s seventh mission of the year, and only the first time (this year) that they were able to attempt a ground-based recovery.

For missions like today, where a rocket “only” needs to deliver supplies to low earth orbit, it is less complex to direct a first stage to a recovery location on land.

But many other launches require supplies to be sent much higher (and go much faster), like for many commercial satellite launches. For these missions, the first stage will initially be moving much faster and there may not be enough fuel to navigate it efficiently back to land. Because of this, SpaceX is working hard to perfect recoveries on their autonomous drone ship out at sea.

While successful, today’s rocket landing was only a secondary goal of the launch. To accomplish the primary goal of today’s mission, SpaceX’s Dragon capsule will be delivering supplies to the International Space Station. As their ninth resupply mission to the ISS (known as CRS-9), Dragon will be bringing with it nearly 5,000 pounds of cargo and research experiments to the astronauts on station.

Dragon is scheduled to arrive at the ISS in a couple days, on the morning of July 20th. Once it’s time to send Dragon home, it will be loaded with supplies that need to come back to Earth. Dragon is currently the only vehicle capable of bringing supplies in a pressurized environment back from the ISS.

Fourth rocket arrives in the hangar. Aiming for first reflight in Sept/Oct.
SpaceX is working to recover first stages so that they can eventually reuse them on future launches and reduce the overall costs of rocket launches. While they have yet to re-use a recovered rocket, Musk has recently stated that they are aiming for a reflight in September/ October timeframe.
