Right after launching in France, Apple Pay is now available in Hong Kong as well. As usual, only a few partnering banks are part of the launch, but the company expects to roll out support for more cards and stores over the coming months.

If you have a Visa or MasterCard credit card from HSBC, BOCHK, Hang Seng, DBS or Standard Chartered, you’re all covered. Just head over to the Wallet app on your iPhone, iPad, Apple Watch and soon Mac. BEA and HKT are next. American Express cards are also supported.

Dozens of stores already support Apple Pay, including all sorts of convenience stores. Apps that rely on Stripe or Braintree to process payments can now start accepting Apple Pay. Deliveroo, Foodpanda, Homeaway and others already flipped the switch.

Now, the only question is whether that will be enough in the land of the Octopus card. Everybody has a contactless Octopus card in Hong Kong already as you need it to use public transportation. This card also lets you pay for stuff in stores if they have an Octopus reader. It’s become a ubiquitous payment method.

Apple Pay is now available in 9 countries: the U.S., the U.K., Canada, Australia, China, Singapore, Switzerland, France and Hong Kong. Apple Pay is now processing five times the transaction volume of a year-ago. 10 million locations now support Apple Pay around the world. And of course, these numbers will only grow as Apple expands its payment service to new countries.

Apple Pay has significantly increased its European presence and has now launched in France (previously, it was available in UK and Switzerland).

It supports Visa and MasterCards (credit and debit) from four banks - Banque Populaire, Carrefour Banque, Caisse d'EpargenTicket Restaurant. Orange and Boom will  soon be added.

The mobile payment service works on iPhones (6 and later, SE included) and the Apple Watch. iPads (Pro, Air 2, mini 4) are  now supported too, but only for in-app payments (i.e. not in stores). You can pay in the following stores:

As there appeared a rumor that the chips for the next generation iPhone, presumably the iPhone 7 and 7 Plus will be exclusively manufactured by the chip maker TSMC. Since then, it remained silent and we have virtually no further information concerning the Apple A10 soc. A Chinese Weibo user brings it possible today to change some details about the Apple A10, though it still would go to early test results of the chipset.

As we all know that the A9 chip in the iPhone 6s is produced by the both Samsung and TSMC, but Apple iPhone 7 would only have chosen the TSMC. This is partly due to the fuss surrounding the iPhone 6s chip, causing Samsung is slower than TSMC. The TSMC technology would also ensure that the chip can be made smaller, while performance is considerably improved. As the rumor says that Apple iPhone 7 would first make a lot thinner than the iPhone 6s, but this now will save only a fraction.

According to the new information to make the iPhone 7 and 7 Plus, the company will use the new Apple A10 soc. Earlier this week tests were launched and the new chipset again seems to be a bit faster, but the step at this time is not as great as in previous years.

On the benchmark app Geekbench 3, the A10 manage to achieve a single-core score of 3,000, about the same amount as the Apple A9X, which under the hood of the iPad Pro 9.7 and 12.9 can be found.

However, Apple A9 of the iPhone 6s and 6s Plus usually scores around 2500 points, which equates to a performance increase of about 18%. That percentage corresponds to the difference between the early benchmarks of the A8 and A9 last year. It is therefore possible in our eyes that the scores will be higher than the current case. The final difference between the A8 and A9 was less than 43%.

Another option is that Apple has more focused this year on improving the battery life by making the chip more efficient. Earlier this week we heard instance even though the iPhone 7 battery will have the capacity of 1960mAh, an increase of 11% compared to the 1750mAh battery of the iPhone 6s.

Apple recovers $40 million worth of gold by recycling old iPhones/iPads

Apple’s iOs recycling efforts yield $40 million worth of gold from old devices

You probably know that Apple uses gold in manufacture of iPhones. What you didnt know that Apple was able to salvage nearly $40 million worth of gold from recycled iPhones. Apple has released its latest annual environmental report yesterday which reveals that Apple was able to recover some valuable (I mean really valuable) minerals from recycling its old products.

 A report by Business Insider notes that Apple was able to recover over 61 million pounds of steel, aluminum, glass, and other materials from its computers and iPhones. The most valuable of them was of course, Gold. Apple was able to recover 2,204 pounds of gold, which is well over a ton.

 Environmentalists will be happy with the commendable efforts by Apple in recycling has allowed it to actually recover a whopping 2,204 pounds of gold from old devices, which is worth approximately $40 million on the open market today. While Apple may be worth billions and billions of dollars, $40 million is still not a small amount by any means that too from recycling iPhones.

 Recovering gold from old iPhones is one thing, but Apple also managed to harvest around 3 million pounds of copper that is worth $6.4 million, as well as 4.5 million pounds of aluminum that amounted to $3.2 million.

 Such efforts are needed to be implemented by other companies like Samsung, LG so that we can make earth a nice place to live and also preserve scarce resources.

China is now #2 in iOS revenue, behind the U.S.

Earlier this year, app store analytics firm App Annie predicted that China could overtake both the U.S. and Japan in terms of revenue generated from iOS applications as soon as this year. The year isn’t yet half over, but that prediction appears to be on its way to coming true: China has just moved past Japan to now score the number two position for iOS revenue – up from third place back in January.


 The country was already the leader in terms of iOS downloads, a spot it acquired in Q1 2015 following growth in the market influenced by adoption of Apple’s larger-screened devices, the iPhone 6 and 6 Plus. Prior to that, in 2014, China had been the second-largest country for iOS downloads.

 But getting apps onto users’ devices and generating revenue from those apps are two totally different things. That’s obvious, too, when you compare iOS downloads and revenue with those from Google Play, for example. Last year, Google Play downloads were 1.5 times that of iOS downloads, but Apple’s App Store still leads in revenue.

 According to App Annie, China’s iOS revenue growth grew nearly 2.2 times from Q1 2015 to Q2 2015. This growth is being contributed to in-app purchases, however, not paid app downloads. It’s also almost entirely driven by games – and not just games in general, but several very specific titles, says App Annie.

 A handful of core games are helping to contribute to the revenue growth, including Fantasy Westward Journey, Westward Journey Online, Hero Moba, and The Legend of Mir 2.
However, while games are driving the growth for the time being, App Annie notes that games are often a signal of larger trends to come.

That said, because of the revenue these and other titles are generating, China also passed Japan in iOS Games revenue in addition to Overall iOS revenue.

 So how close is China to grabbing the number one spot for iOS revenue? App Annie says the U.S.’s lead is still wide – a sizable 30 percent, in fact. But if China’s App Store revenue continues to grow at the same pace, it’s on track to pass the U.S. in the “coming quarters.” This year, perhaps.

Apple’s iTunes Allowances will be shut down next month

Apple is discontinuing support for iTunes Allowances, the feature that allowed parents to send monthly credits to a recipient’s – meaning, their child’s – Apple ID for use in the iTunes Store.


  That allowance could then be spent on music, videos, apps or books, as the child desired. Now, according to an update to the iTunes Allowances support page on Apple’s website, the feature is being shut down, and existing allowances will cancel on May 25, 2016.

 That means the installment payments will no longer be delivered after that date, but the unused credit will not actually disappear. Apple says that credit will remain in the recipient’s account until it’s used.

 Allowances were useful for parents who wanted a way to control spending and set limits on what their kids could buy from the iTunes Store every month. And they offered a nice alternative to having to constantly deal with nagging kids, begging for new apps and games.

 With the feature’s shutdown, Apple is directing customers to use “Family Sharing” instead. Introduced in 2014, Family Sharing lets up to six people share media purchases, including iTunes music, movies, TV shows, books and apps, without having to share accounts. The idea is that purchases could be paid for using one credit card, while parents could also approve kids’ spending requests from their own devices.

 In addition to sharing media, the feature can also be used to share photos, a family calendar and more between devices, including iPhone, iPad, iPod touch, and Mac. It requires iOS 8 or later; OS X Yosemite or later; and iTunes 12. PC users can also take advantage of the feature via iCloud for Windows.

 One of the more useful aspects to Family Sharing versus iTunes Allowances is that it permits kids under 13 to have their own Apple IDs, as they’re managed as part of the family group. Organizers can also limit access to content on their kids’ devices using iOS’s “Restrictions” or OS X and iTunes’ parental controls.

 However, the feature still needs improvement in other areas. Namely, it doesn’t support in-app purchases, which is a common request from kids. (iTunes Allowances did.). Some parents also find it frustrating to have to manually approve every iTunes purchase request, too. But that’s because they may not realize the “Ask to Buy” option can be disabled for kids and other members.

 MacRumors first spotted the feature’s shut down, noting that Apple customers were being informed of the closure via email. While Apple didn’t give an official reason for ending iTunes Allowances, it makes sense. There’s no need for both options, given how much overlap there is between the two services.

Android vs Apple iOS : Weak iPhone 6s sales see drop in iOS adoption


Android wins the battle against iOS, thanks to poor iPhone 6s sales


Apple is said to be going through an innovation crisis, as the company has hardly launched “revolutionary” products in the last couple of years. Further, the Silicon Valley giant is concentrating more on reinventing products that were designed a few years ago, which in turn has led to drop in adoption figures in major markets.

iOS also appears to have been affected by the poor demand for the iPhone 6s and 6s Plus, which were launched in September 2015 as revives of the core devices launched one year before.

With the drop in demand for new iPhones, which is expected to fall below the 200 million mark this year, more users are shifting to Android these days indicate new data provided by Kantar.

With increase in Android’s domination and improved shares in almost every single country, Apple’s iOS has lost users in the biggest markets.
European performance

For example, in Europe, Android has achieved increases in every single market, attaining a growth of no less than 6.7 percent in the EU5 region (February 2015 versus February 2016).

The main change was noticed in Italy where Android enhanced its share by 12.1 percentage points, reaching a record 78.4 percent. On the other hand, in the same country, iOS actually lost 3.2 percent and dropped to 14.3 percent. In France, Android achieved a growth of 9.1 percent to settle at 71.8 percent, while iOS fell down by 1.7 percent to reach 19.9 percent.

However, Spain was the sole country where iOS actually bettered its share, as the platform went up 0.4 points to achieve 9.1 percent. Android also managed an increase of 2.0 percent to reach no more, no less than 90 percent. This implies that in Spain, 9 out of 10 phones are powered by Android, which is very impressive.
US performance

Even though US remains the key market for iOS, things are not shaping well for the operating system here either. At present, Android is working in 58.9 percent of the devices in the country, a 3.3 percent rise over February 2015, while iOS lost 0.5 percent of its share and dropped to 38.3 percent.

The other mobile platforms there don’t even count because Windows reduced to 2.2 percent from 2.6 percent, while the “Other” category went down to no less than 0.2 percent.

According to Kantar, current buyers are not interested to spend money on a high-end device and that’s why Android is growing so fast, as there are far more affordable choices when it comes to Google’s OS.

However, this news should not dishearten Apple, as the iPhone SE could also see growing sales and thus help the iOS recovery on the short term.

Lauren Guenveur, mobile analyst for Kantar Worldpanel ComTech explained, “In the US, the average spend on purchasing a smartphone in the three months ending February was $352. For Android buyers that meant that roughly 69% of consumers reported spend under $350, while for iOS buyers, that share was 39%. This represents a unique opportunity for the newly launched iPhone SE, which, at a $399 price point, will likely appeal to more cost-conscious first-time smartphone buyers who might otherwise be more inclined to pick up an Android smartphone, and to the sizable installed base of iPhone owners who have not yet upgraded.”

Apple’s Greg Joswiak revealed at the company’s “Let us loop you in” event in Cupertino that iOS 9.3 would be available for download beginning today.
Joswiak called the free update “one of the biggest ‘dot’ releases yet.”
With iOS 9.3, users can now enable Night Shift mode to make their iOS device’s display easier on their eyes. Other features include passcode or TouchID protection for notes, new education features, top stories for Apple news, updates to the Apple Music and Maps apps in CarPlay and enhanced Health apps.
